WEXFORD GIGS, SHOWS ... LATEST NewsSJ McArdle's PORT at Wexford Arts Centre last Saturday was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. The specially commissioned show (Droichead Arts Centre and Create Louth and the Arts Council), the songs of which are on the album Old Ghosts in the Water, celebrate Drogheda's port. McArdle, former frontman of the award-winning band Kern, assembled a talented crew for the show (and the album): Wexford-based Carol Keogh (Plague Monkeys), Graham Henderson (Moving Hearts, Sinead O’Connor) and Trevor Hutchinson (Lúnasa, The Waterboys) along with vocalist John Ruddy and fiddle player Barry Kieran (Kern). From start to finish it is packed with a bunch of killer songs which successfully encapsulate the excitement, danger, romance and intrigue of old ports all over the world. It reeks of rotting fish, fleshpot lust and violence. The songs, reflecting as they do an era and a culture now past, come pre-aged like an old port. In style and tone they bring to mind the darkness and world-weariness of Nick Cave and latter day Bob Dylan, married to the storytelling chops of Warren Zevon. McArdle's sonorous voice sounds like it has been dragged from a deep and watery place. John Roddy has the wiry vitality of an old salt to him, none better to deliver a sea shanty. And Carol Keogh, what a voice. Sounding at times like the venerable English folk singer Shirley Collins, her come-hither seen-it-all cooing is like a soothing salve on a rope-burn. Let's give this one a full five stars. What do the cold dark days ahead hold for us? Loads actually. Weekly movies at the The Picture House (Wexford Film Society); talks/lectures (history, science, fiction) at libraries around the county; live music and comedy; and loads of Christmas markets. Looking to next weekend, we have the Frederick Douglass Wexford Civil Rights Festival (Nov 22-26) and Decadent Theatre Company production of Billy Roche's On Such As We at the Opera House (Nov 24-Dec 2).
