WEXFORD GIGS, SHOWS ... LATEST
News
Jazz singer Stella Bass returns this evening to Jazz at Johnstown. Joining her are Johnny Taylor on piano, Barry Donohoe on double bass and Dominic Mullan on drums. Giving the run of top-notch jazz gigs at the venue in recent years, Johnstown Castle can rightfully claim to be the jazz capital of Wexford.

Comedian Neil Delamere is at Gorey Little Theatre this evening. A regular visitor to these parts he is one of the best on the circuit.

Poet Stephen James Smith has declared The Mysterious Case of Kitsy Rainey at Wexford Arts Centre this Saturday to be his pick of the weekend. It stars the wonderful Mikel Murfi.

'The Laughing At The Crossroads Festival' brings an over-generous helping of comedy and music to Enniscorthy tomorrow evening. Totally free.

Loadsa live music happenings all over the place this evening, the trad gig at Colfers, Carrig on Bannow probably being the pick of the bunch. Or maybe Alfie Hudson Taylor at The Crown Live. Although The Dream of Horses at Frank's Place looks promising. Stella Bass at Johnstown Castle? The venue alone is a draw and the lady herself is always a big hit with jazz lovers. As for the kids, they will be arts centre bound for a multi-band evening of Dystopia. Maybe play it safe and head to Mary's Bar for a quiet pint and an evening of traditional ballad singing. See listings below.

Pianist and répétiteur Rebecca Warren's featured artiste at the most recent of her salon gigs at Green Acres Gallery was mezzo-soprano Sarah Luttrell. Last Saturday's lunchtime gig was so so good with the programme presenting a nice mix of Opera favs and Irish airs. I have never before heard Ag Críost an síol done outside of a religious setting. Believe me when I say that as Sarah deep-intoned the final words, 'I bParthas na ngrás go rabhaimid', I was ready to drop to my knees in joyous exultation. With support group Credo unavailable, violinist James Warren added a little sparkle to proceedings.

There were some brilliant gigs in Wexford last weekend, one of which was that at Wexford Arts Centre featuring Cuban guitarists Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas and Eduardo Martin. Calling themselves The Bridge, the music these lads perform is close to a religious experience. Some acts dazzle you with their virtuosity; some pull out all the stops to entertain. Ahmed and Eduardo quietly go about the business of not just playing the notes but in taking the listener on a journey to the heart and soul of the music. In the words of Martin Hayes, 'Sometimes we have to listen past the surface sound … and seek the emotional feeling and intent.' For the master craftsman, this means 'You must know the rules before you break them.' The audience at WAC witnessed a most harmonious sundering of the rules!

Great reports from the feast of home-grown theatrical talent on offer at the Page to Stage Festival.

Stephen James Smith's featured poet at Thursday's So Say So at Wexford Arts Centre was Nigerian/Irish artist Samuel Yakura with accompanying music by Basciville. The open mic second half was wild with audience members invited onstage to spill out the just-hatched creations of their fevered and word-scrambled cranial imaginings. All works included the following words: giraffe, horse chestnut, orange, jazz, see-saw.

Books by Wexford-based authors ...

Displaced Cavan man, Kevin McDermott, recently launched his new book A Legacy of Memories at Wexford Book Centre. He had the hand worn of him signing copies of the book at the recent Cavan launch. Who says Cavan people are 'mane'! If you know Kevin, you don't need me to tell you that he a talented lad - musician, storyteller, comic, poet and actor. 'Time of the Corncrake' is the title of his autobiography written in 2004. A few years back he released an album entitled 'Musical Gems from a Button Box'.

Volume 5 of Fascinating Wexford History by Des Kiely is now available at The Book Centre, Wexford. Talented writer, photographer, researcher and all-round nice guy is Des.
